Last time we looked at the first 5 Signs of bad leadership. I’m sure you are curious to learn the concluding 5. Here goes.
Being an effective and strong leader isn’t for the faint of heart. If you are wishy-washy in your decision-making, hoping to avoid committing to a course of action, chances are you are a bad leader. Inconsistency leads to confusion and mixed signals.
Good leaders set their sights on a goal and keep moving toward it. They may be flexible in how they get there, but they realize their company’s ultimate success is riding on their ability to be decisive when pressing forward.
Sure you have great ideas, and yes, you’re probably super talented. But are you stealing someone else’s thunder to make yourself look good? Ask yourself this: when was the last time you highlighted an employee for a job well done?
Do you acknowledge their ideas and give them credit when they go above and beyond? The difference between a terrible leader and a great leader is how they treat their people and how they inspire others to aim for a common goal.
You can’t do that if you’re too self-centered to notice when others hit a home run. In fact, you should also be creating ways to help employees further their own careers and continue to expand their abilities. To do so, make sure you have a formal or informal mentorship program or a leadership development plan for aspiring managers.
You’re a workaholic machine. You’re the first one in the office and the last one to leave at night. No one seems to know anything about your personal life, which is fine with you because you’d rather remain stoic and detached anyway.
Do you hear those alarms going off in your head? These are clear signs of a horrible leader. Being committed to work is one thing, but if you are working unreasonable hours, you are setting that expectation for everyone around you.
That may be a recipe for burnout—for you and the rest of your team. And as for your personal life, a good leader understands that people want to know who you are beyond your role as boss. Don’t be afraid to show a little vulnerability and let people see you as a “normal” person, with your own life, family and hobbies outside of work.
If you are the kind of leader who is all talk and no follow-through, doubt and mistrust will cling to you like a bad odor. As the saying goes, your name is only as good as your word, so make good on your promises and carry through on your commitments.
If you agree to something or pledge to a course of action, do everything in your power to see it through. This will establish trust and integrity with those around you. Otherwise you will quickly lose ground with your staff and your clients.
If you feel you have to double-check every detail, no matter how small, you might be a micromanager. Good managers know that they must trust their staff to do their jobs and do them well. If you constantly second-guess everyone around you, or nitpick, then you probably aren’t spending time focusing on big-picture issues.
Getting involved in the minutiae of everyday activities will weigh you down and take away valuable time you should be spending on broader concerns. As a great leader, you should be paying attention to industry trends or strategically planning your company’s next moves.
